Prior to his tenure with the Birmingham Stallions, Holtz carved an impressive path in collegiate football coaching. He showcased his coaching acumen as the head coach for several distinguished programs including the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, South Florida Bulls, East Carolina Pirates, and the Connecticut Huskies. Holtz's coaching journey began to take shape early in his career when he served as an assistant coach for prominent teams such as the South Carolina Gamecocks, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Colorado State Rams, and the Florida State Seminoles.

Holtz's passion for the game was cultivated under the tutelage of his father, the legendary Lou Holtz, former head coach and esteemed commentator. Skip's immersion in the world of football commenced during his collegiate years at Notre Dame, where he honed his skills both on and off the field.
